Highly Recommended。 Easily the best Star Wars novel since the Star Wars EU books were booted from being canonical。 No prior knowledge required。As the first piece of media in a grand plan to explore the High Republic era, Light of the Jedi was required to do a lot of heavy lifting by setting the stage for future books, comics, games, TV shows and more。 It does this very effectively, while also delivering a strong narrative about a ship destroyed in hyperspace with pieces of the ship dropping out Highly Recommended。 Easily the best Star Wars novel since the Star Wars EU books were booted from being canonical。 No prior knowledge required。As the first piece of media in a grand plan to explore the High Republic era, Light of the Jedi was required to do a lot of heavy lifting by setting the stage for future books, comics, games, TV shows and more。 It does this very effectively, while also delivering a strong narrative about a ship destroyed in hyperspace with pieces of the ship dropping out of hyperspace at random, colliding with planets to cause enormous devastation。 It really showcases what the Jedi at the height of their powers were capable of。Charles Soule and the rest of the contributors to The High Republic have the advantage of being set so far away from anything remotely Skywalker, and thus advantage has been grabbed with both hands。 。。。more

This was an incredibly interesting book, and was written extremely well, but I did not think it was 100% the greatest book ever。 I also think I read this book at a little bit too young an age。 Still, it was a good book, and was worth the read。 I felt though, that it was frustrating that if you didn't read this book, you couldn't fully understand any other story in the mega-series。 Still a good book, and I learned a whole new vocabulary of words。 This was an incredibly interesting book, and was written extremely well, but I did not think it was 100% the greatest book ever。 I also think I read this book at a little bit too young an age。 Still, it was a good book, and was worth the read。 I felt though, that it was frustrating that if you didn't read this book, you couldn't fully understand any other story in the mega-series。 Still a good book, and I learned a whole new vocabulary of words。 。。。more

Very exciting first part。 Interesting set up for future stories, but the highlight is the first part (of three) and the cool ways some Jedi use the Force (I’m mainly thinking of Avar Kriss)。

Well written。 I enjoyed this one。

Genuine waste of time。 There are about 200 characters, none of them matter, and you get about 5 minutes with each of them。 I quit at about the 50% mark because a plot had really yet to develop。 There was literally no motivating factor to read this。 This was my first ever Star Wars novel and I don't think I'll try another。 I expected a 6 and got a 3。 Shame, really。 Genuine waste of time。 There are about 200 characters, none of them matter, and you get about 5 minutes with each of them。 I quit at about the 50% mark because a plot had really yet to develop。 There was literally no motivating factor to read this。 This was my first ever Star Wars novel and I don't think I'll try another。 I expected a 6 and got a 3。 Shame, really。 。。。more

Strong start, and a strong ending, but the pacing in the middle was a little ropey and I found myself losing interest。 As a result it took me a long time to finish this。 Overall though, it was fun to read a new era of Star Wars, and I'll probably keep following The High Republic: the ending hooked me good。 Strong start, and a strong ending, but the pacing in the middle was a little ropey and I found myself losing interest。 As a result it took me a long time to finish this。 Overall though, it was fun to read a new era of Star Wars, and I'll probably keep following The High Republic: the ending hooked me good。 。。。more

This book felt more like a few short stories that involved the same characters and locations。 It didn't seem like a novel to me。 There was a theme, but no real overarching plot。 This book felt more like a few short stories that involved the same characters and locations。 It didn't seem like a novel to me。 There was a theme, but no real overarching plot。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 The last third really picked up momentum。 The character development is lacking。 I don’t feel invested in any of the characters, but I’m just interested enough to read the next in the series。

I wanted to finish it, but I can’t keep reading a novel where there are no characters。 And by characters I mean character journeys, internal plot, and all that jazz that makes them interesting。 And the so called villains reminded me off bad and outdated caricatures of Biff from Back to the future。 Sure I get that they are villains from the way they behave, but they have NO inner motives whatsoever。

I loved Charles Soule's other books and was curious to see what he would do with Star Wars。 Turned out pretty great, lots of Jedi powers and action scenes, the High Republic pulling together in times of disaster, and setting up for a sequel。 The first section is pretty long but views a lot of small bits of a solar system wide disaster, and several of the Jedi characters are interesting。 I am still not going to track down all the other Star Wars books but I'm glad I read this one。 I loved Charles Soule's other books and was curious to see what he would do with Star Wars。 Turned out pretty great, lots of Jedi powers and action scenes, the High Republic pulling together in times of disaster, and setting up for a sequel。 The first section is pretty long but views a lot of small bits of a solar system wide disaster, and several of the Jedi characters are interesting。 I am still not going to track down all the other Star Wars books but I'm glad I read this one。 。。。more

Phenomenal start to the High Republic Era。 Loved the new characters, factions and political setup of the Republic。 It really feels like a different period and doesn't use prior star wars lore as a crutch。 Utilizes some items as appropriate but really arrives to build a unique story。 Can't wait to read the next novel in the series! Though this book felt amateur/fan-fictiony, had some pretty poor pacing, and a few too many characters and plot points that were nothing but set up for future books and comics (and it was obvious), I'm still a little intrigued to see where this new era of Star Wars goes。 So at least it wasn't bad enough to turn me completely off of the franchise like certain other pieces of media 😳 Though this book felt amateur/fan-fictiony, had some pretty poor pacing, and a few too many characters and plot points that were nothing but set up for future books and comics (and it was obvious), I'm still a little intrigued to see where this new era of Star Wars goes。 So at least it wasn't bad enough to turn me completely off of the franchise like certain other pieces of media 😳 。。。more

(hide spoiler)]I read it because I was curious about the High Republic, and so far, I'm still somewhat curious about what comes next, but not yet sold on this new era。 。。。more

Why? A few chapters earlier a they were able to move giant space debris hurdling towards planets。 What the force can’t pull a little girl closer? Three Jedi can’t work together to make a horse drawn cart either stop or come towards them? The twist with the Eye taking control over the Nihil was whatever。 It didn’t work for me。 The character arch that was forced on after the fact seemed like a stretch and an attempt at showing cunning where there wasn’t any indication earlier。 Why? Why wasn’t that a different character who stole the mask and then impersonated the Eye? Something just different and more interesting would have been nice。 This book was just something to sell。 Maybe an excuse to add more food to the menu if Galaxy’s Edge。 This wasn’t a piece of fiction that needed to be told。 It was just blah。 Which made the obvious set ups at the last few chapters a shame。 I am going on another twenty year hiatus for now。 。。。more

I ended up fairly enjoying this book and look forward to the sequel。 The first part however is a major slog。 It spends a majority of the time introducing us to the protagonist as they find themselves in a pickle。 It however isn’t much more than that, there seems to be no actual threat till the second part of the book。 As the antagonist are introduced you quickly become more invested in their storylines then the heroes, which are akin to political dialects of the prequel trilogy。 The books ending I ended up fairly enjoying this book and look forward to the sequel。 The first part however is a major slog。 It spends a majority of the time introducing us to the protagonist as they find themselves in a pickle。 It however isn’t much more than that, there seems to be no actual threat till the second part of the book。 As the antagonist are introduced you quickly become more invested in their storylines then the heroes, which are akin to political dialects of the prequel trilogy。 The books ending did leave me with a sense of excitement to see what the Jedi (and more so the antagonist) would do next。 。。。more

I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but barring a few exceptions, I've never been able to get into the books。 The EU was too convoluted for me to delve into (even as early as the late 90s/early 00s), and always read more as "try-hard" science fiction instead of the space fantasy adventure that I always assumed written Star Wars would be。 With the Disney takeover and the books actually becoming canon, I was hoping that the books would start to matter more and feel more like the Star Wars I knew from the mo I'm a huge Star Wars fan, but barring a few exceptions, I've never been able to get into the books。 The EU was too convoluted for me to delve into (even as early as the late 90s/early 00s), and always read more as "try-hard" science fiction instead of the space fantasy adventure that I always assumed written Star Wars would be。 With the Disney takeover and the books actually becoming canon, I was hoping that the books would start to matter more and feel more like the Star Wars I knew from the movies。 So far though, these expectations have not been met, and first book in The High Republic did not change that。Don't get me wrong, Light of the Jedi isn't necessarily bad。 Charles Soule is a good writer, and his style is easy to read and follow。 The problems come with what he has to work with in regards to the plot and characters。 The first part of the novel is quite engaging in terms of plot, but there are so many characters and very few of them are developed enough that by the time you get to the midpoint, you're asking yourself "Who was that again, and why are they important?" I would have rather had us focus on 1-3 main characters, with others just coming in for brief periods or as side chapters。 It eventually made me lose any interest into what was happening next。Ultimately, this was a 3/5 sci-fi book, but a mediocre, 2/5 take on Star Wars, especially for the first part of something as "epic" as The High Republic is supposed to be。 The first half starts off promising but soon falls apart。 Soule unfortunately hits the same walls that's held back almost every Star Wars book before it, in that it tries too hard to be something it's not。 。。。more
